Face Swap Video Call

For a face swap video call, create your character picture in the studio below, then route it through OBS Virtual Camera to a supported desktop calling app. The studio changes the picture; select your microphone in the calling app so the other person can hear you.

A FRIEND / A CHARACTER / TWO CLUES

Make room for the other person to answer.

Try a character-guessing round with a friend who knows you are using an AI effect. Choose one reference, offer two spoken clues and let your friend ask a question before you reveal the character. A useful setup carries the whole exchange: your friend sees a moving character, hears each clue and can interrupt with a question you hear in return.

Use Live Face Swap for the character picture. For a face swap video call, the next decision is whether that picture and your voice arrive together in your friend's app.

This is a desktop workflow with separately installed OBS and a calling app that can select its virtual camera. This website does not install a camera device or start a call. General routing steps are described below; compatibility of the complete setup with this studio has not been tested. Phone-app routing is outside this workflow.

Existing before-and-after character-effect demonstration in a call-style interface, shown without sound. It does not demonstrate the OBS setup below or a verified call made from this page.

Check the picture your friend receives.

Compare the original and transformed appearance in the existing demonstration. That illustrates the visual change, but it does not tell you what a friend receives from your computer. For your own call, ask about the character in their video tile, then check that you can both hear and answer each other.

BEFORE AI / DEVICES AND SOUND

Prepare the call before using AI time.

Arrange the call with AI off. Ask your friend to wait while you prepare, keep your call camera off, and test the microphone and headphones in the calling app first. This lets you solve device and permission problems before using AI credits.

Check voice in both directions

In Zoom Settings → Audio, choose your microphone and headphones. Use Test speaker and Test microphone to hear the tone and your recorded voice. In the call, ask your friend to say a short sentence and confirm they can hear yours. Select audio devices in the calling app even if you already chose a camera.

The studio's Record microphone option only adds your voice to clips recorded here. You can leave it off when you do not need a studio clip. It does not set the call microphone, send the OBS mix or change your voice.

Confirm that a virtual camera is available

With call video off, create an empty test scene in OBS. Set Virtual Camera to Program and choose Start Virtual Camera. Look for OBS Virtual Camera in the calling app's camera list, then stop the virtual camera after the device check. On macOS, allow the OBS camera extension if requested. Resolve device availability before starting AI; older OBS and macOS versions have compatibility limits.

The receiving app must offer OBS Virtual Camera as a camera choice. If that option is unavailable on your setup, stop here and resolve the device support first. A phone preview or a downloaded clip does not establish this desktop camera route.

DESKTOP / BROWSER TO CALL CAMERA

Connect the picture for your face swap video call.

The face swap video call needs two separate connections: the studio picture into the call's camera input, and your microphone into its audio input. Keep the browser window at a fixed size and on the studio tab while you configure the picture. The Zoom desktop app is the camera-selection example below; another app must expose a compatible camera choice.

  1. 01

Prepare a capture of this browser window

Create an OBS scene and add Window Capture on Windows, or macOS Screen Capture with the window method on supported macOS versions. Select the browser window containing this studio. Use Transform → Edit Transform to make an initial crop around the AI output area, excluding the camera-input panel and browser controls.

Before continuing. Keep the studio tab selected and the window open rather than minimized. Check the window selection and capture permission while AI is still off. The idle example can locate the output area, but it is not your own character or proof that the live capture works.

  2. 02

    Create your own moving character

Choose Face Swap, select a reference or upload one, open the camera and sign in. Turn off Auto record if you do not want a second local recording. Check the selected model's rate and your balance, then start AI. Wait for your own output and make a small head movement. Confirm that the same movement reaches OBS and refine the crop if needed.

Before continuing. A face swap video call uses AI credits while the studio session runs, including time spent configuring the calling app. If more setup is needed, choose End in the studio before working on it. Stopping an OBS recording or hiding the call video does not stop AI usage.

View plans and credits before starting the session.

  3. 03

Send the intended OBS output to the virtual camera

In OBS Virtual Camera settings, choose Program to send the normal OBS output, then choose Start Virtual Camera. Inspect that output before enabling call video. If you use Studio Mode, put the prepared scene into Program with Transition; editing Preview alone does not change the Program picture.

Before continuing. The selected output should contain your moving character and the surrounding picture you intend to share. Keep your original camera panel, account dialogs and controls outside the crop. If OBS shows the wrong window or a frozen character, fix that before selecting it in the call.

  4. 04

Choose the virtual camera in the calling app

In the Zoom desktop app, open Settings → Video & effects and choose OBS Virtual Camera from the camera list. Check the preview before turning video on. In a meeting, the arrow next to Video also lets you change the camera. Keep the microphone and speaker set to the devices you tested earlier.

Before continuing. After enabling video, ask your friend what they see and whether it moves when you speak. Your local camera selection is only one check. Continue to the short exchange below once their tile shows the intended character picture.

THE TEST / CLUE, QUESTION, RETURN

Let your friend check the face swap video call.

Use a short private exchange to judge the face swap video call from both ends. These are suggested lines, not a transcript or measured call result. Pick clues that match your own reference. Wait for your friend's response at each stage instead of delivering a one-way performance.

  1. TURN 01

    Offer a clue, then listen

Choose a robot-like character for this sample, or change the clues to fit your reference. Face the camera and give the opening clue at an ordinary speaking pace.

    YOUR FIRST CLUE

I'm using a character effect. First clue: I belong in a science-fiction story. What do you think I am?

    CONFIRM TOGETHER

Ask your friend to describe the character they see and repeat the clue they heard. Both the picture and the complete sentence should arrive. Then listen to their guess without speaking over it.

  2. TURN 02

    Answer your friend's question

Ask your friend to say, Are you made of metal? Wait until you hear the complete question, then give the second clue. Let your friend make a final guess before revealing the answer. Use the same reference throughout the exchange.

    AFTER THEIR QUESTION

Yes. Second clue: I recharge instead of sleeping. What's your final guess?

    AFTER THEIR FINAL GUESS

I'm a robot explorer. Did the character you saw match the clues?

    CONFIRM TOGETHER

Your friend should hear the answer and see movement during it. If replies overlap or the face keeps catching up after the words, pause the game and check the connection. A local recording cannot verify this two-way conversation.

  3. TURN 03

Pause video before adjusting the setup

Announce a short adjustment, turn video off in the calling app, then check the studio. When the picture is ready, turn video on again and ask your friend to confirm it before continuing.

    BEFORE TURNING VIDEO OFF

I'm pausing my video for a moment while I check the picture.

    AFTER RESTORING VIDEO

I'm back now—can you still see the character moving?

    CONFIRM TOGETHER

Confirm that the picture disappears when you turn call video off and returns to the intended character afterward. Microphone mute is a separate choice. If you end AI during the pause, wait for a new moving output and recheck OBS before restoring call video.

WHEN THE TWO VIEWS DISAGREE

Follow the picture and voice to the missing step.

Find the first point where the picture changes: your browser output, the OBS output, then the call preview and your friend's tile. For a face swap video call, a good browser preview alone is not the finish line. Change the input or connection responsible for the problem before trying another character.

Your friend sees your original face

Check the selected call camera and the OBS crop.

Turn call video off while checking. The app may still be using the physical webcam, or OBS may include the local camera panel. Choose the intended virtual-camera output and inspect the cropped scene. Changing the character reference does not fix a wrong camera selection.

OBS moves, but the call picture is frozen or wrong

Check the virtual-camera output and receiving app.

Confirm that OBS Virtual Camera is started and configured for the output you inspected. Re-select it in the calling app and check the app preview. If the preview moves but your friend's tile does not, check the call connection before changing your reference or model.

The picture arrives, but one of you cannot hear

Check microphone, speaker, mute and joined audio in the call.

Test one direction at a time. Being able to hear your friend does not prove they can hear you. Select the microphone and speaker in the calling app, check its permission and mute state, then repeat a short sentence. Enabling the studio recorder's microphone will not repair this audio path.

The conversation feels delayed or doubles back

Check the exchange with headphones and one call connection each.

Stop playback of saved clips and remove a second joined device that is creating an extra audio route. Ask your friend to describe whether the voice repeats or the picture lags behind it. Consistent echoes, visual delay and unstable call delivery need different fixes; changing a downloaded clip's audio timing does not adjust a live call.

The AI output stops during the game

Pause call video, then inspect the studio session.

Check its message, connection and credit balance. Resume only after the browser output, OBS and the call preview are moving again. This workflow does not provide an automatic fallback; choose deliberately whether to restore the character or use a different camera.

AFTER THE GUESS

Finish the call and reset for the next one.

A face swap video call has separate call, camera-routing and AI controls. End each part deliberately. Leaving the meeting or turning off its camera does not tell the studio to stop generating.

  1. 01

    Close the conversation

Finish the game and leave or end the call. If you are only changing the effect and staying in the meeting, turn its video off first. Do not use a camera switch as a substitute for checking what your friend receives.

  2. 02

Stop the camera route and AI

Choose Stop Virtual Camera in OBS and End in this studio. Check the studio status to confirm generation has stopped. If you made local clips, save the ones you want before leaving the tab.

  3. 03

Prepare the next call's camera choice

Check the camera selected in the calling app before the next meeting. Choose your physical webcam if that is what you want to use, and inspect its preview with video off. For another face swap video call, repeat the receiving-end check after restarting the AI and virtual camera.

Keep the setup if your friend can follow both clues, ask their question and hear your reply while the character remains visible. A wrong guess alone is not evidence of a camera problem: if the picture and conversation were clear, choose better clues. If the exchange breaks down, use the observations above to decide which part to adjust.

CAMERA, SOUND AND SESSION

Face swap video call questions

Can I make a face swap video call directly from this page?

The studio creates a live AI picture and can save local recordings. It does not host a call or install a virtual camera. The desktop workflow here captures the browser output in OBS, then selects OBS Virtual Camera in a compatible calling app. Test the complete route on your setup before relying on it.

Does a face swap video call work on a phone?

These instructions are for a desktop with OBS and a compatible camera input in the receiving app. A phone browser preview does not replace the camera in a phone calling app. This page does not establish a mobile call connection.

Which microphone should I select?

Choose the microphone you want your friend to hear inside the calling app and test it there. Select your speaker or headphones separately. The studio's Record microphone option is for locally recorded clips, and choosing the virtual camera does not configure your call audio.

Why can I see the effect while my friend cannot?

The browser preview and the camera selected in the call are separate. Compare the browser output, OBS output and call preview in that order. Confirm the virtual-camera selection, then ask your friend to describe their tile. An old picture, physical webcam or unstarted camera route will not be fixed by a different character reference.

Is a face swap video call free?

Local camera preparation is available before AI starts. Eligible new accounts receive trial credits; live AI generation uses available credits at the selected model's displayed rate. Time spent waiting in the call or configuring OBS with AI running also uses credits. Choose End in the studio when you finish generating.

Does turning off call video stop AI credit usage?

No. The calling app's video control, OBS Virtual Camera and the studio AI session are separate. Turn off call video to pause sharing the picture; choose End in the studio to stop generation. Leaving the call does not send that command to this page.

Can I upload a photo as my reference?

Yes. Choose Face Swap and upload a clear reference with one visible face, or select a gallery character. Your live camera supplies the performance. For the guessing game, keep one reference so your friend can follow the clues and the same character throughout the exchange.
